Active on and off since September 2018, the north cone of Cerberus Volcano is currently erupting a low altitude cloud of ash, visible in this PlanetScope image from May 15, 2022. Cerebus is one of several volcanoes on Semisopochnoi Island, located near the end of the Aleutian Island chain. Although one of the most remote places in the United States — Semisopochnoi is closer to Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula than mainland Alaska — erupting volcanoes in the Aleutians can disrupt air travel between North America and Asia. Planet’s constellations of Earth observation satellites can help scientists monitor these far-away hazards. (1) Let’s talk about your geospatial requirements. Visit www.geospectrum.com.ph.        "When the climbers in 1953 planted their flags on the highest mountain, they set them in snow over the skeletons of creatures that had lived in the warm clear ocean that India, moving north, blanked out. Possibly as much as twenty thousand feet below the seafloor, the skeletal remains had formed into rock. This one fact is a treatise in itself on the movements of the surface of the earth. If by some fiat I had to restrict all this writing to one sentence, this is the one I would choose: The summit of Mt. Everest is marine limestone." John Mcphee, Basin, and Range.        Formula 1 arrives in the Sunshine State for the first time this weekend for the Miami Grand Prix. This pair of high-resolution SkySat images show the final stages of the construction of the racetrack. The track surface was mainly complete while many of the grandstands were still being assembled on April 8, 2022. A month later, on May 4 (only 2 days before Free Practice 1) equipment could still be seen on the track, presumably putting the finishing touches on the asphalt.        Once completed, the Extremely Large Telescope will be the largest optical telescope ever made. It’s currently under construction on Cerro Amazones, a mountaintop in the Atacama Desert. This pair of high-resolution SkySat images show the progress of construction from February 1 to April 28, 2022. The mountain’s topography stands out more in the April image because the sun was lower in the sky in April (Chilean fall) than in February (Chilean summer), casting shadows that highlight the relief.        Just over a month ago the Ever Forward cargo ship (sister to the Ever Given that became famous after blocking the Suez Canal in 2021) ran aground in the soft bottom of the Chesapeake Bay. Ever since, it’s been mired in place. The U.S. Coast Guard has been helping the crew remove containers from the ship in an attempt to free it in the next few days, when the full moon gives a little extra lift to the Bay’s high tide. This Planet high-resolution SkySat image shows barges being filled with containers on the morning of April 14, 2022. According to Bloomberg, 233 of the 5000 containers on board had been unloaded by then, with another 275 or so to go before the Ever Forward is expected to be light enough to be freed.        GHOST SHIPS OF IWO JIMA. In mid-October 2021 seismic tremors further uncovered World War II relics near the island of Iwo Jima. Two dozen Japanese transport ships that were submerged in the 1940s by U.S. forces to create a breakwater for a harbor are now located on the beach. As underwater volcanoes raise the seabed surrounding the island, areas formerly underwater—and the artifacts found there—emerge from the deep. [2] Lake Maracaibo is one of the largest known oil and gas reserves in the world sits beneath Lake Maracaibo. Since World War I, tens of thousands of wells have been drilled into the lake, initially by foreign corporations and subsequently by Venezuela's state-owned oil company. This region produces around two-thirds of the country's oil. It was previously a source of great richness for the Venezuelan people, particularly in terms of fossil resources and seafood.        Angat Dam—commonly known especially during the rainy season— is one of the country’s largest dams. At present, it is a multipurpose dam used for hydroelectric power generation, water supply, irrigation, and flood control. The Angat Reservoir provides approximately 90% of Metro Manila’s raw water requirements and irrigates around 28,000 hectares of farmlands in Bulacan and Pampanga areas. Additionally, the reservoir serves as a buffer during the rainy season for the surge of water inflow in the watershed catchment basin.        It’s Global Wind Day! Today, we celebrate the energy provided and the possibilities unleashed by wind power. Aside from being picture-worthy, wind farms generate a significant amount of electrical energy that aids the local power supply. The Philippines has its fair share of wind power plants operating across the country like the renowned Bangui and Pililia wind farms, but topping the list is the 150MW Burgos Wind Farm in Ilocos Norte which is the largest wind power project in the country. It is an approximately 600-hectare facility which consists of 50 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3MW, a substation and a 43-km long transmission line. The wind farm generates around 370GWh of electricity a year, which is used to power more than two million households in the Luzon Grid.        More than 20 typhoons take place every year in the Philippines, five of which are typically destructive, taking a toll on not only infrastructure but also human life. The country’s location also makes it vulnerable to other natural disasters including frequent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions as well as tsunamis, sea-level rise, storm surges, landslides, flooding and drought. poster As such, predicting areas of typhoon damage, and other natural disasters, is a key focus of The Department of Science and Technology (DOST-ASTI). As part of the Advanced Science and Technology Institute in the Philippines, DOST-ASTI aims to deliver technology solutions that support a productive and resilient Philippine society. Without access to satellite imagery and data, DOST-ASTI had to rely on extracting ground-based data, which had a long latency causing delays in getting timely information to top-level decision makers. After years of manually monitoring, DOST-ASTI needed a better way to improve disaster management and monitoring, and inform natural disaster policies, so they connected with Planet partner, Geospectrum, to access Planet satellite data.
