Mount Merapi Fumes Only 19 miles (30 kilometers) from the center of Yogyakarta, Mount Merapi’s gray summit towers above central Java’s green hillsides. The barren slopes suggest the volcano’s restless nature, with frequent eruptions stripping away vegetation despite the tropical climate. This snapshot from SkySat captures Merapi mid-eruption, with gas and ash rising from its summit lava dome as boulders tumble from the face of a slow-moving lava flow. Planet’s frequent, high-resolution data can both help monitor the volcano’s behavior and enable scientific research that could mitigate hazards from volcanoes near urban areas.[1] Geospectrum Marketing Services is an official partner and reseller of Planet Labs PBC. [LOOK] On May 2, 2023, China Coast Guard 5204 moved around the tip of Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone. Two maritime militia ships also patrol the east side of the shoal to deny access to Philippine security vessels. [1] In the 1990s, China started building structures over coral reefs and islets inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the West Philippine Sea. The Philippine government won the case filed at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016, which ruled that the Philippines has exclusive sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea and that China’s nine-dash line assertion was at best fictitious and has no legal basis. Last year, the Philippines protested the presence of over 100 Chinese militia vessels in the same area. Back in 2021, over 220 boats, also believed to be part of China’s maritime militia, were seen massing in Whitsun Reef, too. [2] Planet Labs PBC enables analysts to conduct advanced maritime vessel detection and tracking. PlanetScope daily monitoring and high-resolution SkySat tasking help provide valuable information for monitoring activities in the West Philippine Sea. [LOOK] Check out this incredible satellite footage timelapse of the Manila Bay Reclamation Projects in the Philippines, taken by Planet Labs PBC from December 3, 2021, to April 20, 2023. Manila Bay reclamation projects aim to create additional urban space for the expansion of Metro Manila, a bustling megacity with a population of 12 million people. These spaces will be used for commercial and industrial purposes and to create more urban villages. [1] Despite the claimed advantages, experts and environmental advocates have called on the government to stop all land reclamation and seabed quarrying projects in Manila Bay, stating that the activities threaten the marine ecosystem and the survival of the people in the area. The Philippine Reclamation Authority's data shows that 22 reclamation projects are underway in Manila Bay, half of which are already in progress as of Feb. 28. There are also 30 reclamation projects outside of Manila Bay, with 15 already approved and 15 applications under Executive Order No. 74 with memoranda of understanding. [2] With PlanetScope's daily monitoring capability, we can capture medium-resolution satellite imagery anywhere around the globe, up to four times a day, at a 3m pixel resolution. This capability can be used for infrastructure and environmental impact monitoring, as well as agriculture and land use planning. Have you ever heard of the TIP AND CUE method used for gathering data in your area of interest? Our partner, Planet Labs, is taking advantage of this method to provide the most comprehensive data possible! 🛰️💡 "Tip-and-cue" is a technique that uses always-on, medium-resolution imagery like PlanetScope to monitor a specific area or object and then utilizes high-resolution SkySat imagery for a more detailed view. The procedure begins by identifying an area or location with PlanetScope, a COST-EFFECTIVE, wide-field-of-view sensor. When a user detects possible changes between PlanetScope images, they can then task higher-resolution SkySat imagery. This technique can be used in monitoring land use and land cover changes, identifying areas that require infrastructure development or rehabilitation, and assessing the impact of natural disasters. Are you curious about how this method can improve your current data gathering process? Then, contact us at info@geospectrum.com.ph or give us a call at 0916-755-3730. Oil spills can have significant and long-lasting impacts on the marine environment, including harm to marine wildlife, damage to habitats, economic impacts, pollution of water, and long-term effects. According to Joselito Sinocruz, Batangas Port Manager, on February 28, 2023, at approximately 2:00 a.m., the MT Princess Empress carrying 800,000 liters of industrialized fuel oil sank off Tablas Island in Romblon. [1] The latest report from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) indicates that the vessel is now entirely submerged, and the extent of the oil spill is expanding, posing a potential threat to as many as 21 locally-managed marine protected areas. [2] ICEYE, our official partner in providing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Data, showcased how they aided their national partner in responding to a major oil spill occurred last 2021. With the help of ICEYE's technology, the thickness of the oil on the water's surface could be accurately measured, which was critical to mitigating the ecological impact on the region. This capability allowed them to not only bind the oil that was missing but to appropriately plan the right response with the right resources to clean it up as fast as possible. Watch the whole story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_sdcagbI6w&feature=youtu.be ICEYE's SAR technology captures images of the Earth's surface and water using radar waves, which penetrate clouds, darkness, and other forms of interference. It's Geo-gazing day, and since LOVE MONTH is not yet over, we are giving you the satellite view of Galešnjak Island in Croatia, from Planet. This island, also referred to as “Cupid’s Island”, more famously known as the “Island of Love”, was originally spotted by a 19th-century cartographer working for Napoleon. However, the recognition it received was all thanks to Google Earth and the photograph it published in 2008 – depicting the island's heart shape. The awareness of the idyllic sanctuary from the public is unceasingly growing throughout the years as the natural phenomena is seen as a gem on social media. Galešnjak Island is home to ancient Illyrian burial mounds, low shrubs, and little vegetation. It has a population of zero, which makes it a perfect place for some peace and quiet. The soccer pitch of the Antonio Peroles Municiple Stadium (image right) — 100 meters (328 feet) from goal to goal — provides a sense of scale in this true-color SkySat image collected on November 19, 2022. The image has been rotated so the north is on the right-hand side. Although the crops themselves are hidden, this imagery can be used to monitor shipping in and around Almería and help assess damage in the wake of severe weather. Did you know that #deforestation and forest degradation have a significant impact on climate change? Forests play a crucial role in cooling Earth's surface. By absorbing carbon emissions, creating clouds, and humidifying the air, they help keep global temperatures at safe levels. Tropical deforestation through logging leads to more carbon dioxide being released to the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Timely detection of these activities, however, has remained a challenge until now. Radar satellite imagery — that can be acquired regardless of clouds, smoke and darkness — is a reliable source to monitor deforestation worldwide. See the time-series of daily ICEYE SAR #satellite images showing how over 50 hectares of forest area were cleared within seven days. [Awooo!] On the border of Tanzania and Kenya is a ghastly lake known for turning birds seemingly into stone. Lake Natron is a shallow salt lake that loses water through evaporation, leaving behind salts and natron—a sodium mixture which gives the hot (100° F+) water its basic (10+ pH) composition. If the blood red algae filled water isn’t spooky enough for you, then consider that when migrating birds accidentally crash into its chemical-rich waters they die and leave behind ghoulish, Medusa-like, calcified skeletons. [WATCH] Here’s a timelapse video of Taal Volcano from January 2016 to August 2022. Minimal activity is visible until the volcano’s eruption on January 12, 2020, when the previously vegetated area is now covered in ash. The volcano's latest eruption is not only harmful to people, communities, and businesses that live and thrive in its vicinity; it is also harmful, if not fatal, to plants, animals, and ecosystems in the area [1]. More than two years have passed since the eruption, and recovery is visible and is most noticeable in the image's top portion, where vegetation appears to regrow and replace the once ash-covered land. However, the volcano has yet to show rest, having erupted around the first quarter of 2022 [2]. [LOOK] Agriculture fields in the municipalities of Aparri, Buguey, and Camalaniugan are likely inundated with floodwaters due to heavy rains from the recent onslaught of Typhoon Neneng (international name: Nesat) last October 16, 2022. Visual comparison shows the extent of the flooding using an image taken the day after (October 17, 2022) and another from nearly a month ago (September 18, 2022). The most visible impact is on agriculture fields, where the land appears to change into brown or light brown, a familiar visual cue for a flood. These fields are likely currently unusable, and crops planted or nearing harvest are likely damaged. Some roads and towns are also visibly flooded, making access to those areas difficult. As of writing, around 29,544 families and 505.57 hectares of croplands are affected[1]. Planet’s frequent revisit and high resolution can help monitor and assess the impact of natural hazards. As the summer of 2022 drew to a close, much of Europe moved from severe drought to a period of intense storms. On September 15, 2022, heavy rains struck the Marche region of Italy, bringing flooding to towns and villages on the eastern edge of the Apennine Mountains (Monti Appennini). Within hours, sediment and debris from the floods poured into the Adriatic Sea. This series of true-color PlanetScope images shows the mouth of the Esino River (Fiume Esino) near Ancona, Italy, on September 9, 16, and 18, 2022. On September 9 — a typical fall day - the water of the Adriatic was a deep blue. On September 16, a thick plume of light brown sediment was visible extending from the shoreline, and by September 18 sediments from the Esino had mixed with the outflow of nearby rivers to change the coastal water from dark blue to bright turquoise. Planet’s frequent, high-resolution satellite data can help monitor near-shore waters and other dynamic areas of the Earth’s surface. Let’s talk about your geospatial requirements. [LOOK] Our international partner, ICEYE Team is closely monitoring the current situation in Florida caused by Hurricane Ian. This hurricane made landfall near Cayo Costa, Florida, on Wednesday as a major Category 4 storm — the second-strongest possible category on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, according to the National Hurricane Center. The southwestern part of the state quickly felt its impact. [1] ICEYE SAR satellites can collect images of your area of interest (AOI) day and night and in any weather. [LOOK] Karding, known internationally as Nuro, rapidly intensified into a Super Typhoon (ST) in the Pacific Ocean last September 25 and moved westward towards Central Luzon. It reached speeds of up to 195km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 240 km/h [1]. In these PlanetScope images captured last September 27, we can see the impact of Karding on the province of Bulacan. Floodwaters are clearly depicted in the first image, as shown by its characteristic brown color that inundated both agricultural areas and settlements. In the second image, we can see floodwaters draining into Manila Bay, leading to high turbidity. The marine environment and aquaculture ponds that depend on clearer waters are impacted by this change in water quality. Both images are inside the Pampanga River Basin, the fourth largest basin in the Philippines [2]. The basin is popular for agriculture due to its favorable conditions for irrigation, such as low elevation and relatively flat topography. However, their inherent features makes them more prone to flooding. As of writing, damages to agriculture have been estimated to be around P1.6 billion [3]. This overview of the impact of Karding is not possible without PlanetScope’s satellite constellation. Users can keep an eye on damaged locations with its daily revisit to inform damage assessments and spot areas that also require aid. Let’s talk about your geospatial requirements. [LOOK] In September, Greenland should be entering the early stages of Arctic winter — frigid months when the air temperature remains below freezing and snow accumulates on the island’s numerous glaciers. During the first week of September 2022, however, a severe heat wave arrived, melting ice along the coast and leading to the formation of ponds on the surface of the Greenland ice sheet. According to the Washington Post it was the most extensive late-season melting event ever seen in Greenland. Newly-calved icebergs, light-colored sediment carried by meltwater and a handful of blue ponds on the interior ice are all signs of the heat wave visible in this PlanetScope image acquired on September 4, 2022. The unnamed glacier is located on Greenland’s West Coast, just north of Ilulissat. With the help of PlanetScope’s daily revisit, we can monitor the effects of the heat wave and assess its large and small-scale impact. Let’s talk about your geospatial requirements. [LOOK] A Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) map of the New Manila International Airport construction site last May 12, 2022 in Bulacan, Philippines. NDVI can detect and quantify vegetation in construction locations using reflected light in the visible and near-infrared bands. NDVI is commonly used in the agricultural and environmental sciences to assess plant health based on how the plant reflects light at different wavelengths. In this map, the construction site is mainly bare land that has low NDVI values as there is little to no vegetation present. This summer’s searing heat waves and persistent drought have changed the Western European landscape. This pair of true-color PlanetScope images shows the Rhine River where it winds through Dusseldorf, Germany. In August 2021 the area was predominantly green, and the Rhine filled its channel nearly to the brim. By August 2022 grassy parkland had turned brown, and the river’s surface dropped to expose normally submerged erosion control structures (groynes). If the Rhine drops further, barges may not be able to navigate in the low water, impeding transport of goods to and from Germany’s industrial heartland. After an early-summer heat wave in the Dolomites (an Alpine mountain range near the border between Italy and Austria) a large section of glacier on Marmolada — a ridgeline with the range’s highest peak — collapsed. The collapse sent ice and rocks cascading onto hiking and climbing routes on the mountain’s north face, with devastating consequences. This Planet SkySat image collected on July 13, 2022, shows the summit of Marmolada, the site of the collapse (bright white scar about one-third of the way from the image’s lower-left corner), and much of the remaining ice. Large swaths of Yellowstone National Park remain closed after floods washed away the road leading to the Park’s North Entrance. A lingering snowpack (high elevations in the region had up to twice as much snow as usual for mid-June) and strong, late-season “pineapple express” that brought up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) of rain on June 12, 2022, combined to create record-setting floods in the Gardner River and other waterways in northern Yellowstone. This pair of high-resolution Planet SkySat images show a section of the North Entrance Road between Gardiner, Montana, and Mammoth Hot Springs on October 18, 2018, and June 22, 2022. Portions of the road — which was sandwiched between the river and a steep hillside — are completely missing, and even the course of the river changed by up to 80 meters (260 feet). Park officials expect the entrance to be closed at least through the end of the 2022 season. "When the climbers in 1953 planted their flags on the highest mountain, they set them in snow over the skeletons of creatures that had lived in the warm clear ocean that India, moving north, blanked out. Possibly as much as twenty thousand feet below the seafloor, the skeletal remains had formed into rock. This one fact is a treatise in itself on the movements of the surface of the earth. If by some fiat I had to restrict all this writing to one sentence, this is the one I would choose: The summit of Mt. Everest is marine limestone." John Mcphee, Basin, and Range. Just over a month ago the Ever Forward cargo ship (sister to the Ever Given that became famous after blocking the Suez Canal in 2021) ran aground in the soft bottom of the Chesapeake Bay. Ever since, it’s been mired in place. The U.S. Coast Guard has been helping the crew remove containers from the ship in an attempt to free it in the next few days, when the full moon gives a little extra lift to the Bay’s high tide. This Planet high-resolution SkySat image shows barges being filled with containers on the morning of April 14, 2022. According to Bloomberg, 233 of the 5000 containers on board had been unloaded by then, with another 275 or so to go before the Ever Forward is expected to be light enough to be freed. GHOST SHIPS OF IWO JIMA. In mid-October 2021 seismic tremors further uncovered World War II relics near the island of Iwo Jima. Two dozen Japanese transport ships that were submerged in the 1940s by U.S. forces to create a breakwater for a harbor are now located on the beach. Black oil slicks and vivid green algae dominate the surface of Lake Maracaibo. This is a massive lake in northern Venezuela that has been contaminated by oil spills and runoff for many years. Since World War I, tens of thousands of wells have been drilled into the lake, initially by foreign corporations and subsequently by Venezuela's state-owned oil company. This region produces around two-thirds of the country's oil. It was previously a source of great richness for the Venezuelan people, particularly in terms of fossil resources and seafood. PHIVOLCS reported an increase in volcanic smog, or vog, last June 29,2021. This is due to the volcano's evident emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2), a major gas component of magma. Records showed that SO2 emission averaged at 14,326 tons per day on Monday which is a significant increase from the already high average of 4,771 tons per day recorded last Sunday, June 27. Many speculations had spread online regarding the vog from Taal causing haze over the Metro Manila region but PHIVOLCS clarified that this haze was due to pollution and not because of the volcanic emissions. More than 20 typhoons take place every year in the Philippines, five of which are typically destructive, taking a toll on not only infrastructure but also human life. The country’s location also makes it vulnerable to other natural disasters including frequent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions as well as tsunamis, sea-level rise, storm surges, landslides, flooding and drought. poster As such, predicting areas of typhoon damage, and other natural disasters, is a key focus of The Department of Science and Technology (DOST-ASTI). As part of the Advanced Science and Technology Institute in the Philippines, DOST-ASTI aims to deliver technology solutions that support a productive and resilient Philippine society. Without access to satellite imagery and data, DOST-ASTI had to rely on extracting ground-based data, which had a long latency causing delays in getting timely information to top-level decision makers. After years of manually monitoring, DOST-ASTI needed a better way to improve disaster management and monitoring, and inform natural disaster policies, so they connected with Planet partner, Geospectrum, to access Planet satellite data. A month ago, Typhoon Rolly brought heavy rainfall to the Philippines, causing extensive damage. One of the most serious events triggered by the typhoon was the Guinobatan lahar, which flowed down the flanks of Mount Mayon, an active stratovolcano. Planet Labs (Partners of Geospectrum Marketing Services) have collected and processed high resolution satellite imagery of the aftermath of the lahar. Here is a image of the area affected by the lahar, collected on 23 October 2018 and an image of the aftermath of the lahar, collected on 14 November 2020. These images serve to highlight the hazards posed by lahars, the vulnerability of settlements to them and the repeat nature of these events. Reference and acknowledgement Planet Team (2020).
